I look forward to this every year at this time. The time when my rancher friends start branding, tagging, castrating and vaccinating their calves. I decided to take my son this year. It was a good thing since V’s wife was ill and all he had were their brother-in-law and sister to help. He really got down in with the calves and man handled them!
Phillip handled putting the calves into the squeeze shoot so V could do his thing with the branding, vaccinations etc. The sister recorded how many went through. We did 13 calves (not counting the 8 who had already done this before) total, with the breakdown being 8 heifers and 5 steers.
Both Phillip and the Brother would turn their heads when V castrated the steers. They looked pale and pained. I told V later that it seem that women made better calf wranglers because we were not afraid of cutting the balls off the steers. He howled with laughter on that one!
All in all it was a good day and he said currently he only had 2 left when had been born last night so we would have to wait a bit for them. The bad part of the day I am posting in one of my other blogs!
